Earlier, Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey (61) scored half centuries. What Virat Kohli said after winning Player of the Match
Q: Tell us about the innings. Was it slightly unusual in that you conceived it mostly with singles?
Virat Kohli: I think it was similar to the game against Pakistan as well. It was about 7 fours when I got to 100 that day. For me, it’s about understanding the conditions, preparing my game accordingly, and rotating strike because partnerships on this pitch are crucial. My only effort that day and today was to string enough partnerships. When I got out, the plan was to get 20 more and then try to finish it off in a couple of overs. Usually, that’s the template I follow, but sometimes you can’t execute things as you want to. It’s all dependent on the conditions. The pitch dictates how the cricket needs to be played, and then I just switch on and play accordingly.
India vs Australia LIVE Cricket Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Steve Smith comments
Did the inexperience with the bowlers bother you at any point?
I thought the bowlers did a really good job. They worked hard throughout. The spinners squeezed and enabled us to take the game deeper than it could have gone. It was a tricky wicket for batting and tough to rotate the strike at times. I thought everyone did a really good job tonight.
Did it start to play better as it went along, or was it always a better wicket than anticipated?
I think it played similarly throughout. There was some hold for the spinners, a bit of spin here and there, and some skid. There was two-pacedness, and the balls were just holding a bit. It wasn’t the easiest batting condition, probably why the scores were as they were. Having said that, I thought we could have put a few more runs on. We lost a couple of wickets at crucial times. If we got 280 plus, things could have been different.
I guess you wouldn’t have minded a few more partnerships because every time one started to develop, you lost a wicket.
Yeah, that’s right. It always felt like we were one wicket too many down at each stage of the game. If we could have extended one of those partnerships, that’s probably where we get to 280. There would be a little more pressure on the game.
As you look back at this campaign, what pleases you most about Australia’s play?
I think just the way we’ve come together. As you mentioned, the bowling attack was quite inexperienced. I thought they did a wonderful job throughout. Some of the batters really stood up and got big totals in the game against England. I thought we played exceptionally well. There were glimpses tonight of some really good stuff as well. Some really good cricketers in that changing room. They’re going to get bigger and better. defeating Australia by 4 wickets in the semi-final of
